Scuba Diving Holidays in Majorca
Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and offers many fantastic opportunities for anyone looking to take a scuba diving holiday.
There is plenty of marine life in the area to see ranging from fish such as goatfish, cardinal fish and damsel fish to other sea creatures such as sea urchins, sponges, hard and soft coral, moray eels, and octopus.
A number of different types of diving are available off the coasts of Majorca including reef, cave and wreck diving, and all offer the chance to see a wide variety of different creatures.
Diving is available all around the island, but some of the very best is around the southwest. This is because there are a number of marine reserves in this area, and also the rocky nature of the seabed here offers greater variety under the water. Caves and carverns and tunnels form in the carbonate rocks in this area too which provides something slightly different to what you might come across diving over flat seabed areas.
One particularly good base for divers is Santa Ponsa. Here you have access to dive sites ranging from the nature reserve at Dragonera to the Wrecks at Palma.
The water temperature locally varies from around 26°C in August to 13°C in January. This means that in the summer months a 3mm full length wetsuit will be a comfortable option, while for the rest of the holiday season a semi dry-suit should be ok, and out of season (November to April) a dry-suit may well be preferred.
Before you book a dive holiday in Majorca, it’s worth doing a little research to find out if the dive centre that you’re looking at going to has it’s own boat, or it if uses another centres boat and just acts as a middle man. For the best prices and dives it’s best to choose a centre that has well qualified instructors and its own boat(s).
Flying from the UK to Palma in Majorca is in expensive and there are a number of budget airlines who fly to the island regularly throughout the year, while resorts and hotels are plentiful and offer good amenities as well as a range of price options.
