• Diving in Malta

Malta is located in the Mediterranean off the coast of Sicily.  Although the area is not very developed as far as tourists go with a lack of beaches, it does offer diver s fantastic off shore diving opportunities.

Diving in Malta also can include moderately deep diving if you venture farther off the coast and a few fantastic ship wreck diving opportunities if you hire a boat to take you around the corner of Comino.

Although Malta is not known for its coral reefs in comparison with other locations in the Mediterranean Sea, there are still plenty of soft coral and seagrass beds that are thrilling to see.

While diving in Malta there are also plenty of aquatic animals that are pleasant to behold including fire worms, moray eels, octopus, tuna, john dory, seahorses, jacks, and barracuda.

Another highlight of diving in Malta is the caves and arches that were formed from eroded limestone along the sides of the island.  Here you will find some of the best coral reef growths and many aquatic animals that are hiding within the cave walls.

Malta is a great holiday spot for those who want to spend a vacation exclusively diving as there are diving locations throughout the island and two smaller diving locations on the offshore islands of Gozo and Comino.

Generally there is a ferry that runs between Gozo and Malta making a day trip possible if you want to stay elsewhere but spend a day diving in Malta.  However, with so many diving spots to explore most people who are diving enthusiasts choose to stay on the island and explore the sites a few times before moving on.

Summers in Malta are moderate as well as winter.  Therefore, in the summer months of July and August a wetsuit should be sufficient for diving.  However, any other time and you may want to bring a drysuit or semidry suit with you on your trip.

Although you can dive year round in Malta with summer temps of 26C and winter temps of 12C, you may want to aim to arrive between April and October, when the sea temperatures are warmest.

Getting around the island is simple with ferries and shuttles.  For the most part you can get to any dive spot from another within just a few hours unless you are heading from tip to tip.  Thus, it is easy to get a full day of diving in Malta.
